FAQs
Where can I get additional financial assistance if I max out my benefits?
If you exceed your annual sessions or need help paying for extra medicines, you can apply for medical financial aid through several Philippine institutions:
PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office): Request assistance through the Medical Access Program (MAP).
MSWD (Medical Social Work Department): Available inside government hospitals to assess eligibility for discounts.
Malasakit Centers: One-stop shops located in public hospitals that streamline financial aid from the DOH, DSWD, PCSO, and PhilHealth.
Local Government Units (LGUs): Visit your local city hall or provincial governor’s office for localized medical financial assistance.
What is vascular access, and why do I need it?
Before treatment starts, you will undergo a minor surgical procedure to create a portal where blood can safely exit and re-enter your body. This is typically an Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula (the gold standard using your natural blood vessels), an AV Graft, or a temporary Central Venous Catheter if immediate treatment is required.
Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula
What it is: A direct, surgically created connection joining an artery and a vein, usually in your non-dominant arm.
Pros: Considered the gold standard. It has the lowest risk of infection or blood clots and can last for years.
Cons: Takes 6 to 8 weeks to mature (thicken and strengthen) before it can withstand regular dialysis needles.
Arteriovenous (AV) Graft
What it is: A synthetic, flexible plastic tube looped under the skin to connect an artery to a vein.
Pros: Used when a patient's natural veins are too small or weak. It heals quickly and can be used in 2 to 3 weeks.
Cons: Higher risk of developing blood clots or infections compared to an AV fistula. It also tends to have a shorter overall lifespan.
Central Venous Catheter (CVC) / Permacath
What it is: A plastic tube inserted into a large vein in your neck (jugular), chest, or groin.
Pros: Can be used immediately without waiting for a wound to heal. Ideal for urgent or temporary "bridge" access.
Cons: High risk of severe bacterial infection and blood clotting. It restricts your daily routine, as it cannot get wet
How much does PhilHealth cover?
Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) heavily subsidizes your care, providing up to 156 free hemodialysis sessions per year for registered Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 (CKD5) patients.
PhilHealth covers up to ₱990,600 annually per patient, completely dynamicizing the cost of the standard 3-times-a-week treatment schedule. Under recent PhilHealth circulars, many accredited freestanding and hospital-based dialysis centers now offer Zero Cash Out packages. These often bundle free dialyzers, routine monthly lab tests, and Erythropoietin (EPO) injections.
What is Included in the ₱6,350 Session Rate?
Under PhilHealth rules, the increased rate is structured to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for standard treatments. Accredited public and private dialysis facilities must bundle the following into each session:
Medical Consumables:
Your dialyzer, bloodlines, fistula needles, hemodialysis solutions, and standard dialysis kits.
Essential Medications: Anticoagulants (like Heparin) used during the procedure and routine anemia management drugs (such as Erythropoietin/EPO injections).
Laboratory Testing: Routine monthly laboratory checkups required to monitor your toxin and electrolyte levels.
Operational Costs: Use of the machine, electricity, water treatment facilities, and clinical staff time.
